Case Study: Morgan - "You never think this could happen to you, especially at a young age"

Morgan MacRae and Kitty Williams

Morgan MacRae, a 23-year-old Rams Rugby player, made a return to the field just months after experiencing a cardiac arrest. The incident, which occurred in August 2023, while MacRae was at home, came without warning.

His heart stopped suddenly, leaving him unresponsive and fighting for his life. MacRae’s girlfriend, Kitty Williams, was the first to respond, initiating CPR until paramedics arrived. Her actions were crucial, as immediate CPR during a cardiac arrest can significantly increasing cardiac arrest survival rates.

Williams, who had previous CPR training, kept performing chest compressions while emergency services were on their way. Paramedics soon arrived, taking over and providing additional lifesaving treatment.

MacRae was subsequently placed in a medically induced coma and spent several weeks in intensive care, undergoing multiple treatments to stabilise his condition. Eventually, he received a subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (S-ICD), a device that monitors his heart rhythm and can automatically intervene if he experiences a similar episode in the future.

Remarkably, just a few months after the harrowing experience, MacRae rejoined his team on the rugby pitch. His return was met with cheers and admiration from teammates, fans, and the community, who viewed his recovery as nothing short of miraculous.

While he continues to adjust to life with an S-ICD, MacRae is committed to raising awareness about cardiac arrest and the life-saving importance of CPR. MacRae and Williams have taken up advocacy, encouraging everyone to learn CPR. They believe this skill should be mandatory, especially in schools, sports clubs, and public venues.

CPR saved my life. You never think something like this could happen to you, especially at a young age and in good health. It was Kitty’s quick response that made all the difference.

The couple has also used social media to promote CPR training, sharing their story on a dedicated Instagram account, My S-ICD and Me, and connecting with followers interested in their story.

Every minute counts during a cardiac arrest, and with quick action and knowledge of CPR, lives can be saved. MacRae’s story is a compelling reminder that knowing how to respond in emergencies is invaluable.
