This innovative BLS Instructor course will set the standard for teaching BLS to ensure people are being effectively and appropriately taught the skills to save a life. 

The BLSi course is designed to: 

  • give Instructors access to the latest research underpinning resuscitation practice 
  • correct misinformation leading to incorrect practice 
  • empower BLS Instructors to teach with confidence 
  • explore inclusive and accessible training techniques 
  • teach the science behind resuscitation 
  • work for approving bodies as well as community groups 
  • integrate easily with other learning management systems.  

The course is aimed at those who are already trained in Basic Life Support (e.g., First Aid Instructors, First Aiders, Emergency Services etc) who would like to train others to learn BLS. The course is open to new, existing and experienced BLS trainers.

The course consists of seven e-learning modules featuring presenter-led video sections, a real-life scenario based BLS demonstration video and engaging, inclusive learning activities.

The content has been created by experienced clinicians and educational experts, in collaboration with diversity and inclusivity focused partners. 

To ensure an equal and inclusive session is provided, the course contains resources and guidance to assist with planning and best practice teaching techniques. 

Pre-course preparation: 

Candidates wishing to undertake the BLS Instructor course should be familiar with the BLS algorithm and the RCUK Quality Standards for CPR. 

Course programme:  

BLSi is completed through e-learning and the seven modules included in the course are: 

  • Module 1 - The science behind BLS  
  • Module 2 - Planning and delivering your session (Adult CPR/AED) 
  • Module 3 - Frequently asked questions and myth busting  
  • Module 4 - Equipment and resources  
  • Module 5 - Ethical and legal considerations in Basic Life Support  
  • Module 6 - Delivering inclusive BLS training  
  • Module 7 - Neurodiversity and Specific Learning Differences 

You need to complete all seven modules to complete the course.

Assessment and certification 

On completing the course, the learner gains a certificate of completion valid for three years. After three years, the learner can recertify by taking the course again. Learners will have continued access to the course materials during the period from the time they complete the course.

Professionals seeking CPD points should self-accredit their involvement on the basis of one CPD credit per hour and submit their request, accompanied by a written reflection, to their awarding body/Royal College. 

On completing the course, the learner gains a certificate of completion that lasts three years. The user must then retake the course after three years to ensure they have the renewed certificate of completion. Learners will have continued access to the course materials during the period from the time they complete the course. 

The Basic Life Support Instructor (BLSi) course is self-paced and should take about four hours to complete. You will have access to the course materials for three years.
