* Voice prompts on older AEDs

     July 2002

'Resuscitation Guidelines 2000' recommended removal of the carotid pulse check for lay rescuers. The BLS/AED Subcommittee of the Resuscitation Council (UK) has been in communication with the major manufacturers of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to advise them of the modification of the voice prompts necessitated by this change. Most have responded very positively. Many of the older models of AED, though still perfectly fit for service, do not have a facility for changing the voice prompts. They will continue to advise rescuers to check the pulse.

The Subcommittee recommends that instructors of AED provider courses should teach their trainees that a prompt to "check the pulse" should be interpreted as meaning: "check for signs of a circulation".
