      Responsibilities of NLS Course Directors

1. General

Course Directors are accountable for all aspects of the course they are directing. Even though duties may be delegated, the Director is still ultimately responsible for all aspects of the course, including the welfare of the faculty and candidates for the duration of the course.

2. Pre-course

The Course Director must ensure that:
  • the proposed venue is appropriate for running a provider course
  • adequate AV equipment is available
  • written consent to use human umbilical cords has been obtained from the parents of the baby
  • course organisation complies with Resuscitation Council (UK) regulations
  • faculty selection and teaching allocations are appropriate

3. During the course

The Course Director must convene a faculty meeting prior to the start of the course. At this time, it is necessary to ensure that all faculty are:
  • aware of their individual responsibilities
  • familiar with the current guidelines
  • aware of responsibilities regarding continuous assessment of candidates
  • committed to providing a consistent and safe approach throughout the course, by addressing any areas of potential conflict
  • allocated appropriate candidate mentees

Instructor Candidates must be allocated appropriate faculty members as their mentors.
 
At the start of the course, the Director must:

The Course Director must be present throughout the entire course and be able to observe and / or participate in the teaching and assessment practices in each station.
 
During the course, the Director should identify and facilitate appropriate faculty meeting times, at which any concerns of the faculty should be discussed.
 
At the end of the day, a final faculty meeting must be held, during which:
  • the course completion status of all candidates is decided
  • any course organisational problems are addressed
  • all relevant paperwork relating to candidates is completed as per course regulations

The Course Director must ensure effective communication of final results to candidates. This must include appropriate information to candidates who have unsuccessfully completed the course.

4. Post course

Ensure all relevant paperwork is completed and forwarded to the Resuscitation Council (UK) as per regulations.

Investigate any complaints regarding the course and report accordingly to the Resuscitation Council (UK). Any recommended remedial action must be implemented to the satisfaction of the Newborn Life Support Subcommittee.
