      Frequently asked questions

Question:
I am not an RCUK approved course centre - can I run the PILS course?

Answer:
Yes. NHS Trusts, Primary Care Trusts, Universities that train healthcare professionals and Private Hospitals are all eligible to apply to become course centres.

Question:
Do I need to register my course dates with you?

Answer:
No, you do not need to register your dates with us. Your course centre details will be posted on our website unless you have specifically asked for the details not to be published.

Question:
Can we publish the PILS manual on our Trust's intranet?

Answer:
There are currently no plans to release the PILS manual in an electronic format.

Question:
Do I have to buy the manual from you?

Answer:
Yes. All centres must purchase the PILS manual from the Resuscitation Council (UK) and are not permitted to produce their own manuals.

Question:
I want to buy some copies of the course manual but I do not need 25 copies.

Answer:
The manual is available to course centres at a much reduced rate, but in order to offer such a reduction we have to sell the manual in units of 25 to reduce administrative costs. You can buy less than 25 copies via our publications list, but the cost is £11.00 per copy.

Question:
Do we need to keep the candidate testing sheets and course evaluations?

Answer:
The Resuscitation Council recommends that adequate records are kept for a minimum of 15 to 18 months following the course so that any issues can be dealt with locally. Records should be maintained in line with local policies.

Question:
Can teaching on the PILS course count towards the 3 courses every two years requirement for EPLS Instructors?

Answer:
Yes. EPLS instructors who teach on two PILS courses per year can count them towards their EPLS instructor requirements (i.e. one of the three EPLS courses in two years). Instructors must inform the EPLS co-ordinator in writing of the dates of the two PILS courses.

Question:
Do I need to send my programme and faculty for approval?

Answer:
No. You should follow the faculty regulations and the standard programme.   No course approval numbers will be issued.

Question:
I only have 10 candidates on the course and would like to reduce the skill station times - is this possible?

Answer:
Yes. The standard programme is designed for a maximum of 30 candidates. If you have fewer candidates on the course you may adjust the practice time accordingly.

Question:
Are CEPD points available for the PILS course?

Answer:
Yes. Candidates attending the course may claim five points. Faculty teaching on the course may also claim five points but no more than ten points in any one year. If you have any further queries regarding CEPD please contact your Royal College.

Question:
Do I need any special software or settings on my computer to submit my course returns online?

Answer:
The only software you need is a web browser. The login process requires the use of cookies, so you should ensure that your browser is set up to allow cookies. You will, of course, need an Internet connection on your computer.

Question:
When I click on any of the buttons on the PILS Returns Form, nothing happens. What is wrong?

Answer:
This might be caused by your browser security settings being configured to prevent scripts from running. Please check your browser settings and if necessary adjust to allow script execution.

Alternatively, you might be using an old browser which does not recognise script action buttons. In this case you should upgrade to a more recent browser version.

Question:
What do I do if I run two PILS courses on the same day?

Answer:
You should complete an on-line return for each course.

Question:
How do I change my password?

Answer:
You can change your password via the link on the PILS login page on
the website.

Question:
I have forgotten my password - what can I do?

Answer:
You can request a password reminder using the link on the PILS login page on the website.

Question:
I have changed my email address - what do I do?

Answer:
You can submit a request to update your email address using the link on the PILS login page on the website.

Question:
We have a new member of staff who will be completing the PILS course returns

Answer:
You need to contact the PILS co-ordinator (PILSadmin@resus.org.uk) who will be able to set up the new account.
