     Frequently asked questions

Question:
I am not an RCUK approved course centre - can I run the ILS course?

Answer:
Yes, provided your organisation belongs to one of the following categories: NHS Trusts, Primary Care Trusts, Universities that train healthcare professionals, Private Hospitals and Phase 1 Clinical Trials Units that are inspected by the MHRA are all eligible to apply to become course centres.

Question:
Do I need to register my course dates with you?

Answer:
No, you do not need to register your dates with us. Your course centre details will be posted on our website unless you have specifically asked for the details not to be published.

Question:
Can we publish the ILS manual on our Trust's intranet?

Answer:
There are currently no plans to release the second edition of the ILS manual in an electronic format.

Question:
Do you envisage any changes being made to the manual?

Answer:
The ILS manual was fully revised following the introduction of Guidelines 2005. The second edition published in 2006 is the current version. We do not anticipate any changes to the manual for the foreseeable future.

Question:
Do I have to buy the manual from you?

Answer:
Yes. All centres must purchase the ILS manual from the Resuscitation Council (UK) and are not permitted to produce their own manuals.

Question:
I want to buy some copies of the course manual but I do not need 25 copies.

Answer:
The manual is available to course centres at a much reduced rate, but in order to offer such a reduction we have to sell the manual in units of 25 to reduce administrative costs. You can buy less than 25 copies via our publications list, but the cost is £11 per copy.

Question:
I have some old versions of the manual left over – can I send them back to you and get a refund or swap them for the new manual?

Answer:
No, we are unable to give refunds on out-of-date manuals.

Question:
Can we split the programme into two, for example either two mornings or two afternoons?

Answer:
No. The programme must be run using the standard full day format.

Question:
Do we need to keep the candidate testing sheets and course evaluations?

Answer:
The Resuscitation Council recommends that adequate records are kept for a minimum of 15 to 18 months following the course so that any issues can be dealt with locally. Records should be maintained in line with local policies.

Question:
Can teaching on the ILS course count towards the 3 courses every two years requirement for ALS Instructors?

Answer:
No. At the present time, there are no plans to change the teaching requirements for ALS Instructors.

Question:
Do I need to send my programme and faculty for approval?

Answer:
No. You should follow the faculty regulations (see regulations) and the standard programme. No course approval numbers will be issued.

Question:
I only have 10 candidates on the course and would like to reduce the skill station times - is this possible?

Answer:
Yes. The standard programme is designed for a maximum of 30 candidates. If you have fewer candidates on the course you may adjust the practice time accordingly.

Question:
Are CEPD points available for the ILS course?

Answer:
Yes. Candidates attending the course may claim five points. Faculty teaching on the course may also claim five points but no more than ten points in any one year. If you have any further queries regarding CEPD please contact your Royal College.

Question:
How do we obtain ILS certificates for our successful candidates?

Answer:
You need to complete the online ILS course returns form on the RCUK website for each ILS course that you run. Our system will generate certificates for successful candidates, and these will be posted to your centre.

Question:
How do we find out our login information and password?

Answer:
You should have received your login information and password when the online system was launched or when you first registered as a new ILS course centre. If you are unsure about your login information or if you cannot locate the link on the website, please e-mail ILSadmin@resus.org.uk.

Question:
How do we change/update the login information – e.g. following a staff change?

Answer:
There are links from the online system login page, which will enable you to change your e-mail address and/or password. Alternatively, please contact the ILS Course Co-ordinator at the Resuscitation Council.

Question:
How do we nominate candidates for the ILS Instructor course?

Answer:
