The audit monitors and reports on the incidence of, and outcome from, in-hospital cardiac arrests in order to inform practice and policy. It aims to identify and foster improvements in the prevention, care delivery and outcomes from cardiac arrest. The initial scope of data collection is: 'all individuals (excluding neonates) receiving chest compressions and/or defibrillation from the hospital based resuscitation team (or equivalent)' i.e. the team that responds to internal crash call telephone calls (2222) at the hospital. Participating hospitals collect data on a standardised dataset comprising of three modules of increasing complexity (Level A, B and C). The initial dataset (Level A) consists of just 20 fields covering patient data and short-term outcomes. Future modules (Level B and C) are optional and are likely to focus on interventions and longer-term outcomes. Data are collected according to standardised definitions and entered onto the NCAA secure web-based system. Once data are validated, hospitals are provided with activity reports and comparative reports which will be available online (password protected).
